Swindon Scrapstore has been benefiting the local community for over 20
years.
The concept is simple: we turn waste things into play things! By
collecting
local business's clean, reusable waste, we save over 100 tonnes of waste
from landfill every year!
Our
membership,
consisting of over 100 community groups, can then collect these
materials for use in recreational and educational craft and play.
As a charity aimed at serving local and community needs Swindon
Scrapstore needs to constantly review and update its activities and
services and to develop in ways that reflect the social, educational and
environmental needs of Swindon and the surrounding area.
Could you help us with this?
As part of its plans to develop Swindon Scrap store needs more trustees,
people who are committed to the same aims and principles and have the
interest and the commitment to take Scrapstore forward.
What does a trustee do?
Trustees are the people responsible under the rules of a charity for
controlling its management and administration. So it is trustees who
decide what the charity's objectives are and how it will go about
achieving them, and as part of this they make a wide number of decisions
about funding, service provision, day to day running and employing
people within the charity.
Can anyone be a trustee?
Generally speaking anyone who is over 18 years of age can be a trustee.
However, certain people are legally disqualified, for example anyone who
is an undischarged bankrupt cannot be appointed as a trustee of any
charity.
What skills does a trustee need?
Trustees are usually chosen for their commitment to the charities
objectives and for their ability to make an effective contribution to
the charity in terms of skills and experience .So book-keeping,
management skills, or being able to organise fund-raising events are all
valuable skills for a prospective trustee to have.
Having experience of working for another charity will also be valuable, as will experience of being in the same position as the users of the charity's services or experience of being a user and so fully understanding their needs.
Do I need to be a particular type of person?
No, having a wide range of people as trustees is important to make
Scrapstore as representative as possible so anyone irrespective of their
age, sex, race, background and skills can make a valuable contribution
and is welcome to apply..
